Health care is a subject on the minds of many as of late. Insurance premiums, deductibles, prescription costs, coverage of procedures, and physician choice are just a few of the details one has to keep in mind with medical matters. The decision to proceed with a necessary exploratory procedure or surgery is an important one, and not to be made lightly. After an informed decision is made between patient and doctor, the next step is to schedule the appointment at the location where the procedure is to be performed. Hot Springs residents now have another choice to consider for ambulatory GI and Endoscopic treatment. South Central GI and South Central Endoscopy is the new home of Dr. Terri. T. Blackstock, Dr. Brenda G. Ketcher, and their welcoming staff.

The center’s administrator, Vickey Clark, is proud of the finished product that resulted from a unique vision and months of research and development. Open for business since August 3, 2009, the process of design and development of the 8,500 square foot treatment center began in April, 2007. Clark worked side by side with the architect and landscapers, and monitored the interior design.

The clinic not only boasts the only two female Gastroenterologists in Hot Springs, but is also an accredited facility. Accreditation distinguishes this surgical center from many other outpatient surgical facilities by providing a safe work environment and the highest quality of care to its patients. “We believe our patients deserve the best,” says Clark. “When you see our certificate of accreditation, you will know that the AAAHC, an independent, not-for-profit organization, has closely examined out facility and procedures. It means that we as an organization care enough about our patients to strive for the highest care possible.”
The benefits of the South Central clinic over other locations are many. Ambulatory Surgery Centers, or ASC for short, are considerably less expensive for the patients. “There should be a faster turn around time, and the aesthetics are more pleasing and comfortable than going into a hospital,” states Clark.

Beginning outside, an Asian theme provides a comfortable environment. Every tree, bush, flower, stone, and lighting element was specially chosen. The staff enjoys a mediation garden just outside the lounge. Featuring a wooden pergola, stone waterfall and pond, the area is home to fish and another stunning resident. Chi Puff, the happy dragon, is an elaborate and prominent feature of the charming garden. Rising out of the waterfall, Chi Puff holds the treasures of the world, encouraging on-lookers to find their own Chi. In the Asian culture, Chi means life force.

A relaxing setting is important for the patients, and care has been taken to accomplish a tranquil feeling. The fountain in the waiting area produces a mellow bubbling of water that calms the nerves. Soft hues wash the walls in gold and an aquarium distracts guests with laid-back fish. Visual interest comes in complementary colored furniture and artwork. Most notably, The Flower, as it is known to staff. The Flower is an eye-catching art piece, resembling Zinnias, done in lovely shades of red and gold. With custom decorated glass in the reception windows and a private area for paperwork and consultation, the feeling is more of a luxury hotel than doctor’s office.

The interior spaces and patient rooms are home to art pieces from the doctors’ personal collections. The walls are adorned with substantial works done in vibrant colors and eclectic scenes, with sculptures mingling in the halls. The art gallery effect is unique and is not lost on the patients.

The surgical center is generously sized and features state-of-the-art equipment. No detail over looked, patients belongings can be locked inside built-in lockers that resemble furniture drawers. Custom made draperies in a lovely paisley print offer privacy in the patient bays. The nurses’ station in the center of the room offers constant observation of the seven patient cubicles. Soft music playing in the room provides a home-like feel to the room, as well as adding to the relaxation of those preparing for or recovering from a procedure.

Two surgical suites are completely outfitted with state-of-the-art technical equipment. A lab for the surgical scopes is also on-site. Equipment for cleaning the scopes not only sterilizes the tools, but also prints a report on each as it is cleaned. This helps to maintain proper maintenance on the all-important technology.

The clinic should receive information on any materials being analyzed within 24-48 hours, which is a rapid turn around time.

Hot Springs offers many physicians and several treatment facilities, but the South Central GI and South Central Endoscopy stands out. With patients’ care and comfort levels guiding the design, and accreditation cementing the level of care, Drs. Blackstock and Ketcher have separated themselves.

“We are proud to have met the challenge of accreditation, and intend to consistently uphold the principles of quality improvement and patient care in the future,” says Clark.
South Central GI and South Central Endoscopy clinics are housed together at 124 Sawtooth Oak Street. Inquiries can be made at 501-623-7800.

The Flower watches over the GI clinic waiting area. Custom sized sofas in coordinating shades allow plenty of seating and a view of the corner fountain.

Soft lines in the landscaping beds, hand-selected shrubbery, and handsome wooden beams make the GI clinic and Endoscopy center stand out architecturally.
